National Ballet of Canada
National Ballet of Canada (Virtual Internship) – 2021
Recently, I was lucky enough to work with Carmen Wagner, the Head designer at the National Ballet of Canada (NBOC), for a 3 month long design internship organized by the Registered Graphic Designers of Canada (RGD). During this internship, I was tasked with creating a potential child's t-shirt design for next years Ballet Boutique, a volunteer run store inside the Four Seasons Centre for Preforming Arts.
For this task, the Carmen was excited to veer off the usual colour scheme and branding currently being used for the NBOC. I was allowed to experiment with hand-lettering and creating my own typographic treatment and colour pallet, as long as the design contained the NBOC name.
Keeping the brief in mind, I started to think about incorporating movement into a static design, with the majority of my thought process including the seven movements of ballet and dance sequences I had watched of previous NBOC performances (I am an avid ticket ballet fan and have been to a few of NBOC shows). My sketches and research brought me to funky typography that felt like it was warping and moving, much like ballet itself.
The final design was well received by Carmen and the NBOC team, but because COVID-19 still has a presence and the NBOC is closed, this design might have the potential to be used next year.
